K-129 was a Soviet diesel-electric powered submarine which sank at this location on 8 March 1968 carrying several missiles with a 900 nautical mile range and one-megaton nuclear warheads.
The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) devised a top secret project to recover the sunken submarine from the ocean floor in the summer of 1974, using the custom-built ship Hughes Glomar Explorer -which was disguised as a manganese nodule mining vessel.
There are a number of unresolved mysteries and conspiracy theories that gravitate around this incident. Author Kenneth Sewell, in his investigative book Red Star Rogue (2005) claims that the crew of the K-129 attempted a rogue, unauthorized missile launch on a Hawaiian target in order to trigger a nuclear confrontation between the US and China.
