Umatak Bay is the site where Ferdinand Magellan landed on Guam in 1521.

Miguel Lopez de Lagazpi landed here and claimed Guam for the Spanish crown in 1565.

In the 1700’s Umatak became a regular stop over point for Manila Galleons heading to Mexico. Fortifications were built up over time and the town became the economic center of Guam until the mid-1800’s when the cross-Pacific traffic of Spanish ships ended.

See the photos of the tablet on display at the bay, describing its history.
