Thousands of walruses gather together in massive “haul outs” on this area of the coast as their normal habitats, Arctic ice floes, are melting.

These massive gatherings are dangerous for the animals, because if startled, a stampede could cause the death of hundreds of calves and weaker adults.

Mariners should keep clear of the area and avoid loud noises that may startle the animals and trigger a stampede.
