Not quite the sea, but it's still water. Bumpass Hell is a 16 acre are of steam vents, hot water ponds and mud pots caused by the interaction of ground water and magma activity beneath. The area has built up dirt and plank trails throughout the area for visiting hikers. The magma and volcanic activity is a component of the Pacific "Ring of Fire", resulting from the interaction of the Pacific and North American tectonic plates.

Bumpass Hell is within the Lassen Volcanic National Park. The peak of the Mount Lassen volcano last exploded in May of 1915, hurtling dust, rocks and gasses 30,000 feet into the air. The peak is currently climbs to about 10,400 feet.
