Plastiki Mission Control
Organization
The Plastiki is the name of a sailing catamaran and an expedition led by David de Rothschild. With a six-man crew, the Plastiki will sail across the Pacific Ocean starting in San Francisco, California in 2009, ending his journey in Sydney, Australia after a planned visit of several sites of ecological importance or which are susceptible to environmental problems caused by global warming, for instance rising oceans, ocean acidification and ocean plastic pollution.
Notably, the Plastiki will sail across the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, an area of high concentration of plastic pollution located between California and Hawaii.
The Plastiki is a custom 60-foot (20m) catamaran made out of reclaimed plastic bottles, srPET plastic and recycled waste products.
