The Department of Energy has granted a license to Ocean Renewable Power Company to construct, operate, and maintain a 5-unit, 300 kW TidGen Power System in Cobscook Bay, Maine. In 2010, DOE awarded $10 million to ORPC’s $21-million Project. Power production will begin modestly, with the first unit producing enough electricity for 20 to 25 homes, but by 2016 the program is supposed to generate enough power for more than 1,000 homes with additional units at sites off Lubec and Eastport.
